Williams joins Naspers NV from EBay
02 Mar 2016
Jill Williams spent more than seven years at EBay as global spokesperson for the EBay Classifieds Group. She was based (usually) in San Francisco, even though the classified group is based in Amsterdam — where, perhaps coincidentally (or perhaps not), the Naspers classified group is also headquartered.
Williams left EBay in December, and we didn’t know where she landed. Now we do.
She’s now the “communications partner” at Naspers New Ventures, an investment fund established by the South African media / classifieds house. It’s based in San Francisco and is headed by Larry Illg, who worked with EBay in various senior executive roles — most of them on the classified side of the house — from 2004 through 2012.
Williams became “global growth and community lead” of EBay’s marketplace app, Close5, last July, in addition to her role as EBay Classifieds spokesperson.
Illg, meantime, is also on the board of SimilarWeb, a company that’s part-owned by Naspers, which has invested more than $40 million in three funding rounds. He also served as interim CEO of PayU, Naspers’ payment service provider. After leaving EBay and before joining Naspers, he served as VP and GM of new ventures for Trulia, the U.S. real estate site that was later acquired by Zillow.
Here’s how Williams describes Naspers New Ventures on her LinkedIn page:
New Ventures backs companies and founders with ideas that will transform global industries. We create leading international businesses that have long-term growth potential. The team thrives on the unconventional and unprecedented to do what it takes to make our portfolio companies succeed. We identify companies and founders with high-potential and the ambition to scale globally the right way, quickly impacting the communities where they operate.”
