Craig Newmark’s three lessons
08 Dec 2016
There’s absolutely nothing new in it, except perhaps for a picture of a nerdish Craig Newmark in choir — but a blog item by Newmark on Huffington Post is still instructive for people who think Craigslist is run like a normal capitalistic company.
(It’s not, of course. And yet, it’s the single most profitable classified site in the world, with revenue approaching $700 million for 2016 and a margin estimated at around 80 percent. And its revenue is going to grow substantially next year, due to rate increases and new fees.)
If you just want to understand Craigslist and Newmark a little better, check out the blog post.
Newmark’s three lessons “learned back in Sunday school:”
— Know when enough is enough.
— Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.
— Treat people the way you’d like to be treated.
He adds: “My business model is about doing well by doing good.”
