There’s an old adage in law enforcement: “Follow the money.”
Sheriff Thomas J. Dart of Cook County, Ill., (the county that includes Chicago), did that very successfully in his efforts to shut down the prostitution advertising on Backpage.com.
Short-term: Clearly a success. Longer term: Probably a massive failure.

Craigslist was the big winner --- to the tune of $3.1 million --- in its intellectual property infringement lawsuits against data aggregator 3Taps and Lovely, a rentals site. It has also settled with PadMapper, another apartment site that generated terrific results using Craigslist data; no financial terms of that settlement were indicated in the agreement filed with the court.
